About YUWA:
YUWA is a youth-led organisation in Nepal working on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) advocacy. Through its #YouthAccess campaign framework, YUWA mobilises young people to advocate for improved access to SRHR services — including safe abortion — and to challenge stigma, misinformation, and policy barriers affecting young people's reproductive autonomy.
About This Assignment:
YUWA seeks a qualified consultant or consulting firm to develop a high-quality documentary capturing the lived realities of women and service providers around safe abortion access in Birgunj Metropolitan City, Madhesh Province. The documentary will highlight challenges faced by women seeking safe abortion services, showcase youth-led change, and demonstrate YUWA's impact under the #YouthAccess campaign framework.
Birgunj is Nepal's second-largest metropolitan city and a major border town with India. Madhesh Province faces particular SRHR challenges — conservative social norms, cross-border dynamics, limited service access in some areas, and significant stigma around abortion despite Nepal's relatively progressive legal framework (abortion legalised in 2002).
Five Deliverables:
- Documentary Video (7–8 minutes): The main deliverable — a broadcast-quality documentary capturing personal stories of women accessing safe abortion services, perspectives of service providers, challenges and barriers, and YUWA's advocacy impact. Must balance sensitivity with powerful storytelling.
- Teaser/Trailer (1 minute): A shorter cut designed for event screenings, social media promotion, and advocacy events. Should generate interest and drive audiences to the full documentary.
- Short Reel (20–30 seconds): Social media-optimised content for Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook Stories. Designed for maximum reach and engagement among young audiences.
- High-Quality Photographs (25): Professional photographs documenting the production process, community context, service delivery settings, and advocacy activities. Usable for reports, social media, and publications.
- Raw Footage: All raw footage delivered in organized folders. YUWA retains full rights for future use and re-editing.
Who Should Apply:
- Documentary filmmakers and production companies with SRHR/health advocacy portfolios.
- Video production firms experienced in sensitive personal storytelling.
- Multimedia consultants combining video, photography, and social media content.
- Advocacy communication specialists with documentary skills.
- Freelance filmmakers with experience in reproductive rights or women's health stories.
- Production teams familiar with Madhesh Province context, Maithili/Bhojpuri language communities, and border-town dynamics.
Key skills needed:
- Documentary filmmaking (scripting, filming, editing, post-production).
- Ethical storytelling — informed consent, participant safety, trauma-sensitive interviewing.
- Photography — professional quality for publications and digital media.
- Social media content creation — platform-optimised short-form video.
- SRHR knowledge — understanding safe abortion context, stigma, legal framework.
- Cultural sensitivity — particularly for Madhesh Province / Terai context.
